Course Readings:Unlocking the Mysteries of Eating Disorders by David Herzog 2008, New York, NY:  McGraw Hill.  246 pages.

 

Course Description:   

This course will address the mysteries related to Eating Disorders (ED) and strategies to address the problems. The nature of ED and warning signs and possible diagnoses of  are explained.  Prevention, risk-factors and causes of ED are presented. Treatment and professional medical care are explained for potential educator referrals.  Understanding and supporting the recovery process are explored for managing ED.  Approaches to working with family, friends and school professionals are presented for understanding ED issues. Educators will research the ED issues and develop writings or activities to improve understanding and address ED concerns that may arise in school settings.

Independent study courses require 45 contact hours of time for 3 credits.

 

Course Objectives:

 

1. Educators will learn about the general nature of eating disorders and how to spot the warning signs that may be related to eating disorder concerns.

 

2. Teachers will examine myths and misinformation that often surround the issues related to eating disorders and when unhealthy eating habits cross the line.

 

3. Educators will be presented with a variety of the numerous treatment approaches that exist and when medical care professionals or referrals may be needed.

 

4. Educators will learn about supporting students with ED as well as prevention and general awareness for other students and school community.

 

5. Teachers research ED issues, develop writings, lessons or activities that address the understanding and/or prevention of eating disorders in school environments.

 

Chapter Review/Reflections: Write several paragraphs summarizing the main ideas, knowledge or information you thought was significant from each chapter in the book. Extended bullet points of main issues are also acceptable. See rubric for guidelines.

After the chapter reviews, research or DVD Review, lesson or activity, write a two-page final application essay linking key concepts from the book, Unlocking the Mysteries of Eating Disorders to your specific classroom context.  Compose your writings on areas of interest that are relevant to your teaching discipline or professional experience. This will enhance your capacity to apply the new concepts learned in this course. Focus your writings and activities on the concepts and strategies from the book and related assignments on how you can apply them to your school environment, teaching methodology and instructional practice.
