Understanding Hispanic Students and Issues

Course Description

This course will provide an overview of Hispano-Indio history and clarify the various ethnic labels. Indian and Spanish contributions to the Americas will be reviewed. Origins of Hispanic stereotypes and diversity are examined. Hispanic religious, cultural traits, and acculturation levels are presented. Current political, social, and educational issues affecting Hispanic Americans are also examined. This course will help educators improve their understanding of Hispanic history, culture, social and educational issues. Student academic achievement concerns in school settings are also addressed. (3 credits)

Assignments And Grade

A grade of "A" will be given for full assignment completion with analysis, answers, and application writings. Assignments include 5 movie reviews of the videos as listed on the required video list. A field experience to the Denver Art Museum 4th floor exhibit. A brief 1 or 2 paragraph written video and museum reflection review is required. Students will contemplate ideas for writing a two-page research, essay, topic paper, point-counter-point paper, a lesson or unit plan activity or other project related to their educational interest. The 2-page paper is due upon completion of each Module. . This course contains an abundance of information and is presented in a self-paced, sequential correspondence format. Follow directions very closely and specifically.

Directions

Follow the assigned reading, power-point, or video viewing and utilize your Syllabus, Assignments and Directions handout as you progress through the topics. Then answer the AAAA section that corresponds to the outline and topics utilizing the document on the CD-R. Send in this assigned analysis, answers, and applications (AAAA) document when it is completed and you are finished with Section A of the class. Then mail in the course videos, CD's, film/museum reviews and AAAA printouts. Now you are ready to register for Module B of the class.
