Course Readings: Helping Adolescents with ADHD & Learning Disabilities by Judith Greenbaum. (2001) Paramas, New Jersey: Center for Applied Research.  312 pages.

 

Course Description:   

This course will provide understanding and assistance to teachers working with Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Learn Disabilities (LD) students. Educators will be able to define and diagnose students with commonly used assessment instruments. Understandings of the legal requirements are presented along with developing IEP's and Section 504 plans. Student self-management and behavior interventions are explained. Teachers will understand the role of medication and addressing gifted ADHD or LD students. Teachers will write chapter reviews, view a DVD and write an activity or essay explaining how the information in the book can be utilized in schools and classrooms.

Course Objectives:

1.  Educators will have a working knowledge about the specific definitions and spectrum

     of problems that students with ADHD and Learning Disabilities may have.

 

2.   Participants will be able to understand the legal requirements and main laws dealing   

     with student disabilities and the underlying premises of IDEA and section 504 plans.

 

3.  Educators will be able to address reading and writing issues in the content areas,  

     graphic organizers and students check lists as well as other instructional strategies. 

 

4.  Participant will learn strategies for teaching homework-completion, planning and

     self-management skills that students with ADHD need to develop.

 

5.   Educators will view a DVD, write an essay or develop lesson or unit plans utilizing

      the information in the book for classroom and school applications.

 

Chapter Review/Reflections:  Write several paragraphs summarizing the main ideas or information you thought was significant from each chapter in the book. Extended bullet points of main issues are also acceptable. See rubric for guidelines.

Writing Assignments:          

After the chapter reviews, write a two-page paper linking key concepts from the book Helping Adolescents with ADHD & Learning Disabilities by Judith Greenbaum. By focusing your essay on an area of interest that is relevant to your teaching or professional experience, you will enhance your capacity to apply new concept learned in this class. You may choose to specifically focus your paper on classroom-management strategies from the book that are a change from your typical teaching methodology or practice.

Locate the relevant DVD for the course and watch it or them the 1st time for entertainment. Then watch the movie a 2nd time pausing and taking notes.

 

 Then write a movie review -reflection connecting movie content, information and learning with the book or research article or other course material .

Writes a basic review of the DVD with one or two citations of information. Review only includes a minimal connection between course materials and DVD content
